Holiday looks for kids don't have to be frilly and fluffy. This sweet holiday outfit is adorably simple and sleek. I am loving this pleated green jumpsuit for little divas that don't want the fuss. A cozy white cardigan helps keeps arms warm, and the sequins give it a subtle holiday flair. You can't go wrong with with adding a pair of gold flats to the mix, and these Nine West Kids flats totally fit the bill. I may have a bit of outfit envy!<br />

There's a lot of opinions that boy's clothing isn't as fun to shop for, or as cute as girl's clothing, but I totally disagree. I think putting together looks for boy's is every bit as satisfying. What little man doesn't look adorable in flannel?! I love this causal winter look for boys. A cozy fair isle print sweater over a warm flannel, paired with jeans and a cool boot is a staple winter look. I love the contrast of patterns of the red flannel print with the sweater. The touch of brown in the boots also makes for a fun detail. Each of these pieces is also super versatile which make them great additions to the closet. So while boys clothing may not have the glitz and glitter of girls clothing, it doesn't mean the outfits can't be just as fun!<br />

The holiday's season means parties are in full swing. Having a go-to party outfit is a must this time of year. I love this easy no-brainer outfit. It's super simple, but stylish without being fussy. The faux leather pants are a sexy upgrade from everyday leggings and, alone with the heeled booties, give the outfit a little edge. This fluffy white sweater is so soft and comfy and adds a sweet element to the out. Add a cute clutch purse and you have the perfect outfit to make the rounds for the holiday.<br />

I can't get enough of this adorable Fall outfit! I am trying to piece one together in my size. This Zara leopard print cardigan is so super soft and comfy, it's the perfect sweater to keep your little one warm on chilly days. We like to throw on a black and white striped long sleeve tee underneath and black sweater tights for a cozy look. I also love how versatile these pieces are and can be styled for several different looks. Definitely some must have additions to your little fashionista's closet.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Who doesn't love to be comfy? With winter upon us, comfy and warm lounge wear is an absolute must for me. Walmart has been really stepping up it's game lately in all areas, including clothing. I recently picked up this "YAWN" sleep top recently and was instantly in love. Super cute and casual and suuuuuper soft. What more can I ask for? I was so impressed with the comfort level, that I almost immediately ordered this pair of sleep pants and these crazy soft slippers to complete the lounge look. Getting out of bed is hard in the mornings, but made just little bit easier when able to take that comfortable feeling with you.</span><br />

I recently received the opportunity to create labels through <a href="http://www.usfamily20.labeldaddy.com/" target="_blank">Label Daddy</a>. This opportunity couldn't have presented itself at a more perfect time, because I have been wanting to create packaging labels for outgoing orders as some extra blog promotion. Label Daddy labels are wearable, washable and totally affordable. Perfect for parents who want to keep track of family items without having to worry about damaging them with permanent marker. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Label Daddy offers a variety of label types and sizes. There's a label for everything! Clothing, backpack, shoes, lunchboxes, food containers and more are covered by Label Daddy labels. If labels aren't enough, there are also luggage tags and zipper tags. It's a labeling frenzy! I also love that the company offers "packs." The school pack is perfect for the back-to-school crowd and offers an assortment of labels to make sure your kids are covered when back in the classroom. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the way my labels turned out despite not being able to preview them before hitting the submit button. The labels seem durable and of high quality. My only complaints is that the website falls a bit on the lackluster side. The ability to edit labels is limited, and some selections don't offer previews which make it difficult to envision the final product when ordering. The site would also benefit from an increase in the selection of graphics to add to the labels. Even with the website limitations, I am quite pleased at the final result of the product. I can't wait to start slapping these labels on all my outgoing packages!</div>

As we enter the last month of summer, and September creeps upon us, many parents will be sending their little ones to school, and many will be sending them for the first time ever. In most cases it's the parents that have the hardest time with this transition, but it's not uncommon for kids to experience their share of fear and anxiety regarding the first day of school. Parents of anxious kids can take a few steps to emotionally prepare their child in this last month of summer and the beginning weeks of school in order to make it the best start possible.<br />
<br />
<b>1. Have Discussions About School -</b> Begin talking to your children about school and what to expect in a typical school day. Discuss the social aspects of school in addition to the academic aspects. Talk about lunch time, recess, peers and what drop-off/pick-up will be like. Head to your local library or bookstore and select books about going to school to read during the remainder of the summer. Talk about your own positive experiences from school. Dig up your old class pictures if you have any to add a few laughs to the discussion.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Check Out The School - </b>Most school's have orientation days for new students that include a tour of the school. If your school does not offer this, call your school or district board of education and arrange for a tour of the school or a meeting with your child's teacher to establish some familiarity. At the very least, prior to the start of the school year, take a trip with your child to the school to allow him/her to see the building up close. Walk around as much of the school grounds as you can and point out areas that would be of interest to your child, such as the playground. Visit the school more than once if possible for a particularly anxious child.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Schedule Playtime With Future Classmates -</b> If your child is entering school for the first time, scope out your neighborhood for potential classmates and arrange for some play time. If you are unable to find potential classmates, explain the unknown peers as a fun "surprise". Make a game out of it and have your child guess the number of boys and girls that will be in their class and the possible names of some classmates. If your child has been to school before but hasn't had contact with classmates since the summer started, invite a few school friends over for lunch or a play date. Acquainting your child with a few classmates will decrease feelings of anxiety regarding peer interactions. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, host a small "back to school" party the week before class starts.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Involve Your Child in Back To School Shopping - </b>Get your child involved in school supply list shopping and other back-to-school items. Present your child with choices on such items as backpacks, lunchboxes and clothing. Have your child help you plan out his/her lunch menu for the first few weeks. These small activities will allow your feelings a greater sense of control, which is important a child who is anxious.<br />
<br />
<b>5. Role Play - </b>If your child has a particular anxiety (bullies, riding the school bus, interacting with peers, navigating a large school, etc), role play the event with your child. For example, if your child has anxieties about riding the school bus, practice walking to the bus stop together. Have a relative or friend play bus driver and have them drive up to the bus stop. Practice saying goodbye and putting your child on the "bus." If possible, have your friend or relative drive your child to school just like the bus would and drive back to the bus stop to practice drop off with your waiting. Coming up with a plan and brain storming coping skills for your child's fears will help him/her feel more confident when faced with the event. Practice often and problem solve potential solutions together.<br />
<br />
<b>6. Reward and Reassure - </b>Reward for brave behaviors that your child exhibits. Reward for a successful first day of school. Reward your child for using the coping skills practiced. Now is the time to boost your child's mood and spirits with a special gift or outing in response to positive behaviors.<br />
<br />
Sometimes all the planning in the world won't ease an anxious child. An anxious child may exhibit a variety of negative behaviors as the first day of school approaches including physical ailments, withdrawing, fighting with siblings, being defiant towards parents/caregivers, bed wetting, thumb sucking, and other aggressive behavior. Acknowledge that your child is engaging in these behaviors due to school related fears. Normalize your child's fears and anxieties, and encourage your child to discuss those fears and anxieties. Encouraging your child to continually and openly discuss any fears and anxieties with you serves as positive coping skill and gradually increases your child's confidence with continued parental validation and support. If there isn't a noticeable decrease in your child's school anxiety level as the school year progresses, reach out to your school's guidance counselor for additional support and resources.Jessica O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07156870312072912612noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046809661160866628.post-77883787927709305632015-07-28T07:00:00.000-04:002015-07-28T07:00:00.757-04:00At Home Learning: Homeschool Supplies on the Fly<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm becoming increasingly excited about our decision to home school our PreK aged daughter. The process has become much less overwhelming and now my focus is all on preparation. I was super excited to hit the mother-load in the Target dollar section recently. I officially purchased my first home school supplies on a complete whim, which is something that happens often at Target! I was quite pleased at my finds - jumbo dice, counting blocks, number and alphabet charts, a weather chart and a day of the week chart. What a score! One of my favorite items is a "feelings wheel." I snagged a few extra for work. My little one is already eager to get some use out of that materials. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a decent board racking up ideas on <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/ohjessica/homeschooling/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, I'm hoping that by the end of next week I'll have a basic curriculum made and a supply list, so the real shopping can begin. I am also going to scour the interwebs for home schooling corner inspiration. I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a dedicated space to materials and supplies for this crazy adventure I'm embarking upon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For all my homeschooling mamas out there - what is on your "must have" supply list?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
When I began my parenting journey, homeschooling was never in my plans. In fact, I would cringe at the thought of homeschooling. Homeschooling, I was certain, was not for me. As you can imagine, it was quite the surprise to others - and mostly myself! - that I have made the decision to homeschool my daughter for her last year of preschool beginning in September.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
My daughter had attended two years at a co-op preschool up until this past May. We loved our co-op. My oldest son had attended the co-op, the co-op was small and intimate. The teachers knew all of our family of 5 by name and vice versa. The co-op was truly our extended family. We were crushed when the co-op closed it's doors to financial reasons at the end of the last school year. We were also totally thrown for a loop, as the decision to close was announced late in the year. Suddenly I was thrust into a panic of having to find a new school for my daughter, a task I had been able to avoid since my son enrolled in the co-op 4 years prior. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I spent the next couple of months searching and visiting area preschools only to continually be disappointed and unimpressed. Nothing in our price range measured up to our co-op, and all the pricier dream schools were too far of a trek anyway. I finally settled on an option that was in our town, minutes away from our home, and at the same price range as the co-op. I made the decision somewhat reluctantly. Many people had good things to say about the school, but something about it bugged me. It was dreary. It was lacked the life of the co-op. The kids even looked dreary. Other's dismissed my worries, but I couldn't shake the gut feeling that this was NOT our school. A second pending issue looming in the background, was the new changes to the vaccination mandates in New Jersey. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The decision to homeschool became more and more and option as I became more and more uncertain about the option we selected. However, the thought of home schooling was scary. In reality, it's "only" preschool, but the thought of being responsible for my child's education, even a small part, is terrifying. What if I didn't do a good enough job? What if I didn't have enough patience? What is my daughter was bored? What if I couldn't fulfill the social aspect with enough playdates? What if I didn't give her the tools she needed to learn to transition successfully to kindergarten? It was A LOT to consider, especially for someone who had never looked into homeschooling, much less had a desire to homeschool.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In an effort to figure out if homeschooling would be a route I wanted to take, I reached out to a few friends who had also homeschooled through the preschool years. Talking with these moms put a lot of my worries at ease. They made homeschooling sound feasible and manageable. I also talked with our old co-op teacher, and she reminded me that not only had I been helping out in the classroom for years, but my skills as a child and adolescent therapist and my knowledge of child development will not allow me to fail in making sure my daughter is mastering the skills she needs to know. As my confidence and comfort with the idea of homeschooling increased, I became more and more excited about the concept. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
After a talk with my husband, I have officially decided to dip my toes into the world of homeschooling. I feel 100% satisfied with our decision, which was the type of gut satisfaction that I didn't feel from any of the schools we toured. I'm excited for our journey and excited to share it with all of you. I'd also love any feedback or resource shares from any of my readers who homeschool.</div>

I recently had the opportunity to make a photo book through <a href="http://www.adoramapix.com/" target="_blank">Adorama Pix</a>. AdoramaPix offers a variety of photo options including prints, books, home decor, calendars and cards. This opportunity presented itself at the right time, since I had been thinking of making a surprise photo book to document my son's first season of soccer. The Adorama Pix website was easy to use and navigate. I was able to upload and create a 10 page book in under 15 minutes. There were several template options to choose from to assist in the customization of books. The site offers leather, die cut and fabric covers, but I opted for the hardcover. I loved that I was able to have a front and back cover photo on the book to maximize photograph space.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both;">
I was pleasantly surprised when the my complete book arrived so quickly! I ordered on the evening of June 30th, and the book was in my hands on July 6th. Not to shabby, considering mail days were lost due to the holiday weekend. The photo book featured thick, textured photo paper. The paper texture sent me into a tactile frenzy. I couldn't stop touching it. The thickness of the pages is a welcome feature. As a mama of three, I'm always worried my littles will get too aggressive turning the pages of our photo books. With pages this thick and durable, I won't have to worry about ripped pages. The lay-flat binding is a bonus and allows panoramic images to span across two pages without any separation. If I had to complain about something, it would be that the first and last pages are attached to the inside of the front and back cover. But that's more about my own preferences than anything else. It certainly didn't take away from the beauty of the book at all. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisoUl0HtxjyWfHDNTfvvZD-FhYL9ne4BKS0pWGAYpjPQd1wgTFHyS_bzwojMAQjcU_Pj6Q-NMgMp0CmnA9A7By6A75mChiOPhf8KqL8gJZj7R2QlCHdcqlWqvx03M93myW3AE3K4MzIlJR/s640/blogger-image--1703511926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisoUl0HtxjyWfHDNTfvvZD-FhYL9ne4BKS0pWGAYpjPQd1wgTFHyS_bzwojMAQjcU_Pj6Q-NMgMp0CmnA9A7By6A75mChiOPhf8KqL8gJZj7R2QlCHdcqlWqvx03M93myW3AE3K4MzIlJR/s400/blogger-image--1703511926.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm sick. Like, want to die because I feel like death, want to stay in bed all day and cry from the shear pain my body is in, kind of sick. I don't care to get into details, but trust me, things have not been pleasant in my world for the last couple of weeks. It's nothing major, it's nothing life threatening, but it has made parenting little ones with boundless energy a total nightmare. I have three bosses and they are all tyrants. Sicks days are not in the skimpy benefits package. No matter how shitty I feel, clothes still need to be washed, tummies still need to be filled, and household tasks need to be completed, Sick momming is no fun. NOT. AT. ALL.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are a few tips I've learned along the way to make sick momming a bit easier:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Let someone else deal with it.</b> Figure out what tasks you can assign to other members of the family, rather than take on all responsibility to keep the home running. Maybe your eldest child can help out with laundry or dishes. Let your husband deal with chauffeuring the kids to their activities and handling the bath and bed time routines. Take up all those well-meaning friends on their offers to come over and help straighten up the house or cook dinner. You may be used to doing everything, but you don't HAVE to do everything, especially when your body is telling you not to.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Be okay with letting someone else deal with it. </b>Not only do you have to divvy up the tasks to other family members, but you have to learn to be okay with letting them do it their way - which might not be as good as your way, but it's getting done in SOME way, and that's what's important. I have had to take lots of deeps breaths and let go of the control, but it beats the alternative of doing it myself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Allow kids to entertain themselves. </b>If you are lucky enough to have children who can reasonably stay out of danger while you relax, let them entertain themselves. Whether that entertainment be in the form of an all day Disney Jr. marathon, or whether it means allowing them to cover their bodies in washable marker masterpieces, what doesn't kill them will allow you to get some much needed rest. Now's not the time to micromanage their entertainment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Put those self-sufficiency skills to the test. </b>If you're kids haven't had a lesson in self-sufficiency yet, there's no time like the present. Have the kids fend for themselves a bit by making the things they need the most accessible. Have a bin of snacks within reach for little hands. Move juice boxes to the front of the fridge or prepare cups of milk and store in the fridge within reach for thirsty kids. Have a basket of coloring books, crayons, puzzles, etc out for easy play. Have your spouse prep lunch bag meals for the kids before leaving for work and leave in the fridge as an easy-to-grab lunch and/or dinner. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Gather the family in a common area.</b> If your kiddos need a little more of a watchful eye, do your best to confine yourself and the kiddos to one space. Set up camp in your family room or basement. Whatever room in the house makes the most important things accessible. I'm lucky that our basement/family room has a television, bathroom, plenty of space, the majority of the kids toys and a mini fridge. I block off the stairs with a baby gate and can easily take a much needed snooze without too much worry that I'll wake up to trouble.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Make family nap times a new rule.</b> Mama needs a nap? Maybe everyone needs a nap. Done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the most important tip - cut yourself some slack. Yes, things <i>do</i> have to get done, but most of it can wait. </div>

I love vintage inspired looks, so even though I was on a shopping freeze, I couldn't help but be smitten by this dress. I bookmarked it and mulled over it for a few days before pulling the trigger, and I'm glad I did. This airy dress is perfect for a summer date! At 5'8" I don't often wear heels, but since I was already breaking my spending freeze rule, I thought I might as wear break my heel rule too and snagged up these strappy sandals with a 3 inch heel. They give a slight sexy edge to the girly, floral patterned dress. The dress and shoes were instant loves, but it took me a bit longer to find the perfect purse. I finally settled on this studded evening bag, and although I wasn't totally sold on it at first, turns out it works well with the look. Now I just need a date night!<br />

<div>
I am just going to say it - this will never be the blog with pretty pictures. You know the blogs I am talking about. The blogs with the pictures you covet and aspire to. The kind of pictures every blogger feels the need to emulate so every blog ends up looking the same. Unfortunately, that will never be this blog. It won't be for lack of desire, because who doesn't want pretty pictures? It will strictly be due to a lack of opportunity for these reasons:</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
<b>My kids are not cooperative</b>. Sure, we all know that perfectly sweet blog picture of the child leaning artfully against a wall was achieved after 50 shots and a lot of bribing, but here's the thing, I don't have the time, energy or patience for that. Not to mention, my kids are never cooperative for photos. Like never, EVER! Getting a moderately decent picture of one of them alone is a tough enough task, I would have to sell my soul to the devil to get all three to cooperate. They are not swayed by bribes, tears or pleading. I have tried, believe me, I have tried. Without fail, all of my pictures feature the blur of a moving child, or at least one disgruntled look. (See pic above).</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
<b>My walls are not white.</b> White walls are all the rage in blogger-dom In fact, white everything is all the rage. Sometimes I feel like I have been thrust into the Arctic with all the white. It is pretty hard to screw up a picture taken against a white background. I, on the other-hand, am fighting against patterns and colors. I don't own enough white things, apparently, to use as a clean backdrop. Even if I wanted white walls, my kids would eventually fill them up with chocolate handprints. It just wasn't meant to be.<br>
<br>
<b>My kids don't have a monochrome wardrobe.</b> Although I dig the black, white and grey look, and my kids do have a fair share of trendy pieces, I have succumbed to the fact that they are children and not tiny adults. Because they are children, they have a natural attraction to outrageously gaudy clothing, and color combinations that would even make a clown cringe. I would like to grace you with pictures of my kids in a constant stylish state but, chances are, you're going to see them more often than not, in t-shirts featuring cartoon characters. (See above pic... again).<br>
<br>
<b>I have no time to be artsy.</b> There will be no pictures of my feet with a Starbucks coffee cup strategically cropped in the corner of the shot. There will be no carefully strewn objects placed with the transparent attempt to make said objects appear random. There will be no children in directed poses disguised as authentic. There just won't be, and do you know why? Because I don't have the time, or brain cells to think of those things. Pre-kids I could stage a "natural" scene with the best of them, but three kids, two dogs and one cat later, I'm fighting against the odds of everything getting knocked over, broken or covered in fur before I'm able to click the shutter release. Lame, but true, in the words of the great Sweet Brown, "Ain't nobody got time for that!"<br>
<br>
<br>
So there you have it, just a few of the reasons why you won't find pretty pictures on this blog. Although you will not find the prettiest of pictures here, I can guarantee that they will all be honest... even if honesty does come in the form of nose picking.</div>

The boy kiddo has his eye on a beach vacation this summer. Unfortunately life has been too crazy for our usual trek to Virginia Beach, so this year's destination will be the Jersey shore. Close enough! To ease the disappointment, I took the little dude shopping for a new beach outfit. Being that he's become more vocal in his likes and dislikes when it comes to clothing, I was more than delighted at what we ended up with. He's usually not a fan of jeans, but was totally digging these distressed medium wash denim shorts. The hipster shorts needed more than just a regular tee, so it was a total score when we found this blue gradient hoodie. It pairs PERFECTLY with the shorts. Throw on a casual tank underneath and some comfortable Native's on the feet and he's good to go for this year's local beach vacay. This outfit was accomplished without any tears or protests. I'd say this week's shopping was a win!<br />

The out-of-school sillies are already running rampant, and quiet time activities to help calm down the kiddos have been much needed. Word searches have been a great down time activity for my oldest, and, as an added bonus will keep him on top of his reading and spelling game for the next school year. With the Fourth of July right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to make my very own themed word search. This is the perfect thing to keep restless hands occupied when I'm busy with barbecue preparations.<br>
<br>
I had so much fun making this word search, that I'm sharing it with you. Download and print and you'll get at least a few minutes of freedom from shouts of "I'm bored!"<br>

As a California native, I am a beach bunny through and through. There's nothing I love more than to spend the day bouncing between sand and surf. My absolute favorite way to end a day at the beach is to spend the night on the boardwalk. The rides, the games, the FOOD. I love it all. A day at the beach followed by a night on the boardwalk means that a comfortable and versatile outfit is needed. This open crochet chiffon top fits the bill perfectly. It's incredibly cute while not at all fussy, and transitions easily from beach to boardwalk. The color is gorgeous, and the crochet sleeves and neckline add a flirty touch. A simple pair of dark wash jeans shorts that are easy to slip on and off are perfect for this busy mama who doesn't have a lot of time for complicated clothes when dusting the sand off of three antsy kiddos. Speaking of slipping on and off with ease, these huarache style flats are amazing and add a little flair to the outfit with a subtle floral print. These sandals are much more comfortable than they look and perfect for a quick change. This outfit is as easy as 1-2-3, but looks as good as a 10!<br />

This week's shopping finds were to fill my littlest's closet. Summer is in full effect and my babe was in desperate need of more warm weather clothing. These chino shorts are a steal at $8 a pair! I grabbed several pairs for the babe. This gorgeous green pair is my absolute favorite of the bunch. These lightweight shorts are perfect for hot days and look absolutely lovely paired with this super sweet lace crochet tank. I love how little effort this look requires, but it still looks completely stylish and put together. In other words, I can actually get this on my little one and have her out the door in a matter of minutes and have her not look like a feral child. That's always a win! A pair of Salt Water Sandals - a summer staple in our household - complete this perfect summer outfit.<br />

Welcome to the first installment of "Freebie Friday." Every (well, almost every!) Friday readers will have the opportunity for a freebie. Some weeks the freebie will be a printable. Some weeks, the freebie will be a sample offer. Other weeks this freebie will be a giveaway... like today!<br />
<br />
This week I'm giving away a copy of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1620877848/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1620877848&linkCode=as2&tag=moxieandmischief-20&linkId=I4HUHGKK3UO4UWEC" target="_blank">The Snark Handbook: Parenting Edition</a>, a humorous little collection of quips and quotes about the grievances of parenting. It's no War and Peace, but who has time to read War and Peace anyway. A collection of quotes and brief commentary from the author is the perfect bite sized entertainment to read between diaper changes and cries for attention. What parent couldn't use a little witty wisdom on parenting every once in awhile? Who knows, some comical relief might even sway you not to list your brood on Craig's List. <br />

This summer the kiddos and I have a lot of nature-based activities on the agenda. Our list includes hikes, beach trips, visits to the arboretum, and exploratory trail walks. With our summer agenda in mind, most of my recent shopping has been aimed towards finding breathable and comfortable pieces for our adventures. This long sleeve hoodie might not exactly scream summer, but I love that it is lightweight and offers sun protection and is perfect for cooler, evening walks. The hoodie looks awesome with these super versatile khaki shorts. A pair of jungle mocs will make walks easy on the feet by providing comfort and support. The slip on style of these shoes is great, because it makes getting them off and on super easy, which is key on our adventures... you'll never know when we'll want to immerse our toes into the earth! My kiddo picked out this soft, dino lunch box to tote around his treats for longer treks. We're all ready to pack up and hit the trails!<br />

Any parent knows, that once kids come into the picture, date nights with your spouse are hard to come by. I have friends that have gone years - YEARS - without a weekend away with their significant other. Connecting with your spouse is so important and often gets lost in the shuffle of kid activities, school, and general child rearing. Not to mention the barrier of getting some poor sucker to actually watch your kids so you can slip away. Although my husband and I have managed to get away a few times over the years - shout out to grandparents! - date nights are still few and far between. However when we DO get to shake off the kids for a few hours, or even a few days, I'm itching for adventure and dinner and a movie is far down on my list of things to do. If you're like me and want to do something a little different with your spouse, here are some of my favorite, no-so-typical summer date ideas:<br />
<br />
<b>1.</b> <b>Hanging by a thread. </b>My husband and I recently went on a weekend adventure that was unforgettable. We spent a day hanging by a couple of ropes and climbing through a tree top obstacle course. The ropes course took us through a series of rope swings, cargo net climbs, suspended wobbly structures and zip lines - all which tested our physical abilities. We had a complete blast and it was a great way to spend our time. On the same note, mountain climbing, rappelling and indoor rock climbing are also at the top of the list for fun date activities.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Take a hike. </b>Going for a hike is a great way to bond with your spouse. Just you, your love and the great outdoors. No distractions mean the perfect opportunity to re-connect after a busy week. A challenging hike will help build feelings of cooperation and support with your partner as you navigate the terrain together; a more low key train can be made romantic with a pack full of picnic food.<br />
<br />
<b>3. Beach Camping. </b>Is there anything more romantic than camping overnight on a beach? I think not! Not only is it super romantic, but it puts a twist on traditional camp settings. The sound of the waves makes for a peaceful sleep and crisp, ocean air is a refreshing wake up.<br />
<br />
<b>4. Get cooking. </b>Even if being in the kitchen isn't your favorite thing, taking a cooking class together will be a fun and memorable experience. Joint cooking projects will promote team work and solo cooking projects can provide a little friendly competition. Plus, you'll learn a new recipe to add to your dinner menu at home!<br />
<br />
<b>5. Who dunnit? </b>Inactive adventures make for an awesome date night outing and put your ability to problem solve as a couple to the test. Murder mystery dinners are easily found with a little research in most areas - plus you get dinner, so it's a win-win! Interactive games like Escape the Room are also all the rage lately! Those who live near major cities are likely to get lucky in finding something similar.<br />
<br />
<b>6. Shoot 'Em Up. </b>Get an adrenaline rush by shooting up targets at the gun range and your significant other will never want to get on your bad side again. Just kidding!<br />
<br />
<b>7. Paint the town red. </b>If real guns aren't your thing, consider spending the day at a paintball range. This is an activity that might be closer to your comfort zone, and is even MORE fun!<br />
<br />
<b>8. Run, Baby, Run! </b>Obstacle and mud runs are a blast, and provide such a great experience for couples to build their partnership as they motivate, cheer and physically help each other along a challenging course. In addition, extra bonding time can be earned if you train together, or turn it into a family affair by getting the kids involved in the training process. If you are looking for something a little less messy, some alternatives are the equally fun bubble runs, color runs and water inflatable runs that many areas offer.<br />
<br />
<b>9. Ready! Set! Go! </b>A little friendly competition is always good for a couple. Place your bets and rev your engines, as you challenge your partner to a race. Check around for a nearby indoor or outdoor go-kart course and fulfill your need for speed on the track. Loser pays for dinner!<br />
<br />
<b>10. Off the beaten path. </b>Take your date off the beaten path, literally, with an off-roading adventure. Gear up and board an ATV/UTV for an experience you'll never forget. Travel terrain together or ride solo, either way it'll be a good time and give you plenty of fun memories.The couple that gets muddy together, stays together... or something like that.<br />
<br />

I recently hit the jackpot when I was cleaning out my office and found a bunch of unused and partially used gift cards recently. I interpreted this "free" money find as a sign from the universe that I should do some splurging. I knew exactly what I wanted to get - a brand new pair of Joe's Jeans. These jeans are a fit heaven. I love them. But their hefty price tag means that my single pair was a lucky consignment find and not a regular occurrence in my closet. I was excited to be able to splurge on a brand new pair, and boy, was it worth with. These cropped jeans are surely going to be one of my summer staples. The color of the wash looks awesome with this mustard hi-lo tunic. A pair of huaraches and a simple necklace make this the perfect out and about outfit. Super comfy but totally stylish.<br />

Life often gets busy. Housework is never ending, extracurricular activities can be all consuming, and working parents have the extra responsibilities of maintaining work obligations. No matter how busy the day gets, checking in with your kids daily should be a priority no matter what their age. Whether it's at dinner time, during nightly tuck ins or a few minutes in between homework and chores, checking in with a few short and simple questions can help you remain connected amid the chaos. Here are 5 daily check-in questions you can ask kids of any age.<br />
<span id="goog_2115055619"></span><br />
<br />
<b>1. What was your favorite part of the day? </b>Start with the good. Find out what made your child's day special. Don't accept "nothing" for an answer. This is an opportunity to help your child realize even the smallest of diamonds in a rough day.<br />
<br />
<b>2. What was difficult about today? </b> This opens up the conversation to discussing those less than perfect moments about your child's day. It seems the older children get, the more likely they are to keep mum about the challenges of their day. By opening up the door for your child to discuss the not so nice parts of their day, you are allowing them the opportunity to process their feelings and feel supported. This is also a great moment to brainstorm coping skills, problem solve, share a relatable story and give your child encouragement to tackle tomorrow.<br />
<br />
<b>3. What did you learn today? </b>Whether it be a lesson of personal growth or intellectual growth, encourage your child to identify something interesting they learned that day. Don't stress about the simplicity of the information that is learned, it can be something as small as learning a that a new movie is coming out soon. The important thing is that YOU are learning what has caught your child's attention. Be sure to share a tidbit that you learned during your day as well.<br />
<br />
<b>4. What friends did you see/talk to today? </b>Showing an interest in your child's peer group shows that you not only care about what is happening in your child's world, but you care about the individuals that are in their world. Adolescents may remain a little more reserved on sharing information on the friend front, but if you approach the question free of friendship judgment they will be more apt to share a little more of their exclusive social interactions.<br />
<br />
<b>5. What are your hopes/plans for tomorrow? </b>Engaging your child in a discussion about plans for the next day is not only practical, but encourages your child to incorporate some future minded thinking. Having your child share their plans clues you in to what they have on their plate for the next day and allows you and your child to problem solve any scheduling conflicts. If your child is the more spontaneous sort, talking about hopes for the next day will clue you in to your child's dreams and can help stimulate excitement in your child for the possibilities of tomorrow. Ending your check-in with a question like this will also remind your child that even if the current day was not ideal, there's the potential to make tomorrow better.Jessica O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07156870312072912612noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046809661160866628.post-34532272046234081142015-06-03T11:31:00.000-04:002015-06-03T11:31:00.041-04:00Wear It Mama: Urban Hippie<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am totally digging the bohemian look that's all the rage these days. I found this lovely, sheer, kimono and was inspired to create a bohemian look with a dark, urban twist. A pair of destroyed, black skinny jeans give the outfit an city-style edge. Layer a pretty crochet back tank under the kimono, add some strappy black flats and a straw shoulder bag and this look is right up my alley.<br />
